About Us

Two People, One Camera Bag, Twenty-Something Countries.

We’re Susan and Doug — a traveler and a camera industry professional who’ve spent years exploring the world with a lens in hand. Golden Lens Traveler is where we share everything we’ve learned.

Photography travelers

Hi, We’re Susan and Doug.

We’ve always had a camera with us. Not because we set out to become travel photographers — but because standing in the middle of a Parisian market at golden hour, or looking up at the dome of the Pantheon in Rome, or watching a vendor arrange spices in a Jerusalem souk… those moments deserve more than a phone snapshot.

Over the years we’ve traveled through France, Germany, Italy, the UK, Scotland, Amsterdam, China, Israel, and beyond — always with a camera bag that’s seen more cobblestone streets than most people’s luggage ever will. Every trip has taught us something new about light, timing, and what gear actually holds up when you’re on your feet all day.

Golden Lens Traveler grew out of those years of experience. Not a single lightbulb moment — just a gradual realization that everything we’d learned the hard way was exactly what other travel photographers were searching for online.

The Traveler

Susan — The Eyes Behind the Journey

I’m the one who plans the itinerary, finds the hidden market tucked down an alley that isn’t in any guidebook, and insists we wake up at 5am to catch the light before the tourists arrive. I’m not the most technical photographer in our partnership — that’s Doug — but I know a great shot when I see one, and I know how to get us to the right place at the right time.

My favorite subjects are the ones that tell a story — the weathered hands of a market vendor, the geometry of ancient architecture, the chaos and color of a street scene in full swing. Travel photography, to me, is about capturing the soul of a place, not just its postcard version.

On this site I write the destination guides, the travel planning content, and the ‘human side’ of photography — how to connect with a place through your lens, not just document it.

The Gear Authority

Doug — The Lens That Knows Its Glass

I’ve spent my career in the camera and production industry, which means I’ve handled more cameras, lenses, and accessories than most people will see in a lifetime. I know what separates genuinely great travel gear from the stuff that sounds impressive in a spec sheet but falls apart the moment you’re shooting in the rain outside a cathedral in Edinburgh.

When Susan and I travel, I’m the one making the gear calls — what to pack, what to leave behind, which lens is worth its weight on a trip where every gram matters. I’ve tested budget kits and flagship systems across 20+ countries, and the honest truth is that the right gear for travel is rarely the most expensive option.

On this site I write the gear reviews and technical guides — camera comparisons, lens recommendations, bag deep-dives, and the accessory lists that actually make a difference in the field. No fluff, no affiliate-driven bias. Just what we’d tell a friend who asked.

Why We Built This Site

Honest answer? Because we kept making expensive mistakes and couldn’t find a site that gave us straight answers without trying to sell us something we didn’t need.

So that’s what this is. Gear guides written by someone who works with cameras professionally. Destination guides written by someone who’s been there, gotten lost, found the good light, and come home with photos worth keeping. We hope it helps.

The travel photography space online is full of either overly technical gear reviews written by people who’ve never left their studio, or gorgeous destination posts with no practical information about where to actually stand or what settings to use. We wanted something in between — a site that’s genuinely useful for someone who loves both travel and photography and wants to get better at both.

A Note on How We Make Recommendations

We want to be upfront about how this site works so you can trust what we write.

  • We only recommend gear we’ve personally used or that Doug has handled through his work in the camera industry
  • Some links on this site are affiliate links — if you buy something we recommend, we earn a small commission at no extra cost to you
  • Affiliate relationships never influence our recommendations. We’ll tell you when something isn’t worth the money
  • We update our gear guides regularly — if something better comes out, we say so even if it means replacing an affiliate link
  • Doug’s industry background means we sometimes get early access to gear — we always disclose this when it’s relevant
